Sustonable First Environmental Product Declaration

Sustonable, as a pioneer in sustainability initiatives in the specialty of decorative surface materials, has practised its first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD®). This EPD® System is a global programme for environmental declarations that presents transparent, audited, and verified information about the life-cycle environmental impact of products and services.

An EPD reports comparable, objective, and third-party verified performance data on a series of environmental impacts, including the abiotic depletion of fossil resources (ADP) and the global warming potential (GWP) generated during all life stages of the material.

The ADP refers to the depletion of nonrenewable sources such as fossil fuels, minerals, clay… while the GWP refers to the total contribution to global warming resulting from the emission of one unit of that gas relative to one unit of the reference gas (carbon dioxide).

Correlated to Sustonable results, the APD is on average 67% lower than the traditional materials used for decorative surfaces ( engineered quartz, solid surfaces, HPL, ceramics….). Sustonable ADP is 161 Megajoules (MJ), while the median is 537 MJ. In other words, Sustonable is saving more energy while producing the same amount of m2, hence preserving natural resources.

The results for GWP are relatively similar. The carbon footprint of Sustonable material is 62 % lower. The EPD for Sustonable is 11 kg CO2eq. It compares favorably to similar materials, which average 31 kg CO2eq. Hence architects, designers, retailers, distributors concerned about climate change and sustainability actions could use our material to improve their environmental footprint.

Also, using Sustonable material helps to reduce plastic waste as we recycle 100 PET plastic bottles per m2 fabricated. That means an average house of 75m2 would clear 7.500 bottles out of the ocean or mountains,” says Enri Pujadas, Sustonable’s Marketing Director.

The building sector is a significant contributor to carbon emissions worldwide, so it is expected that the number of professionals concerned about their carbon footprint grows significantly. ” Now we can choose, we can all impact the carbon footprint and move towards more sustainable products,” affirms Erik Schoneveld, Sustonable’s CEO.

Sustonable is the first sustainable engineered stone surface designed to reduce the amount of plastic waste generated by the population for years and years. With just PET plastic bottles and natural stone, the company creates a sustainable alternative to traditional materials for decorative surfaces.
